Mark Dickson

Fourth generation farmer, Mark Dickson of Gilby, ND, was college bound when his father told him, “take time off the farm and if you decide the life is really for you, you can always come home.” Mark graduated college, became licensed as a stockbroker and took a job at Paine Weber in Minneapolis, MN. Springtime came around and Mark had enough of the city and was headed back home to the wide-open spaces of the farm. So when Mark’s son, David, was off to college, he passed on the same advice. David followed his father’s footsteps, attending the same university and entered the workforce after graduation. As a grain buyer for the North Dakota Mill, David continued to invest time in the farm after work and on weekends. After five years off the farm, David decided he was ready to make it a full-time career. Together, Mark and David farm barley, edible beans, wheat, corn, soybeans and sugarbeets. With such a variety of crops in their production, rotation has always been a priority for Mark and David. “Barley allows us to have the flexibility we need in our operation. We especially like the marketing opportunity and the timing of harvest compared to the rest of our crops.”
